Flicks & Thoughts Presents - Exploring the Rwandan Genocide

Flicks & Thoughts Presents - Exploring the Rwandan Genocide

Stratford Circus Arts Centre
Stratford Circus Arts Centre, Theatre Square, London E15 1BX, UK

Start Time
05/20/2017 10:00 am
End Time
05/20/2017 5:00 pm
£11.21 – £32.45

Over the course of 100 days from 6th April – 16th July 1994 an estimated 800,000 – 1 million people were murdered in the Rwandan genocide, almost 75% of the entire Tutsi population. The Rwandan genocide is significant not only because of the number of people killed, but the lack of action from many Western countries.

Join Flicks & Thoughts to explore what happened during the Rwandan genocide. 10% of all profits made on the day will be donated to the charity SURF to help them continue their fantastic work in supporting survivors of the genocide. You are more than welcome to make an additional donation through their website if you so wish.

This event is split into 2 parts. A 'Flicks' ticket, will give you the opportunity to see the film 'Hotel Rwanda' which will give you an insight into the atrocities of the Rwandan genocide through film. A 'Thoughts' ticket will give you the opportunity to discuss the Rwandan genocide as part of a group, hear a personal account of the experience of a survivor and researchers, have a 2 course meal and network with some amazing black women. It is not mandatory to attend both parts but we would love to have you with us for the whole day! Those that do purchase both tickets will receive a goodie bag.

Flicks ticket - Film Screening of Hotel Rwanda - 10am – 12:30pm

We have arranged a screening of ‘Hotel Rwanda’ a film that gives an account of Paul Rusesabagina’s experience, a hotel manager who housed over a thousand Tutsi refugees during the crisis. All that purchase this ticket will be given entry to the film screening only

Thoughts ticket - Presentation, discussion & 2-course meal – 12:30pm – 5pm

We have arranged for 2 trustees from SURF to join us to speak about their work to support survivors and to share a personal account of survival. An open discussion and a 2-course meal at 3pm at Pizza Express will follow where you'll get the chance to enjoy some good food & meet & speak more to some incredible black women. All those that purchase this ticket will be given entry to the presentation from & discussion with SURF & a 2-course meal only

Please note, in order to attend both the film screening and the presentation, discussion and meal you will need to purchase both a ‘Flicks’ and a ‘Thoughts’ ticket. There will be a photographer throughout the day so please notify them on the day if you do not wish to be photographed.

Please see below for a more detail about SURF and the speakers who will be attending

SURF (Survivors Fund)

SURF works to rebuild the lives of the survivors of the Rwandan genocide. Mary Kayitesi OBE, a British citizen of Rwandan origin who lost over 50 members of her family in the 1994 genocide, founded the organisation

Alphonsine Kabagabo

Alphonsine was a trustee for SURF from 2001-2006 and returned the board as Vice Chair in 2013. She is also the Regional Director of the Africa Region at the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. Alphonsine is a survivor of the Rwandan genocide and in her story speaks of feeling guilty for surviving and upset not only with her own people, but also with the international community.
